Magdalena Chowaniec (born in Bielsko-Biala, Poland)

has a classical ballet training and obtained her Master of Arts with a Thesis on Bodily Empathy at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz. She works as a performer, choreographer, musician, cultural activist and an artistic researcher. Moving between the materialities of dance and music, her interest lays in examination of the reality, socio-political structures, patterns and relationships we as human beings co-create and on remodelling them via somatic encounters.

Since 2021- Curator and Outreach Specialist for Tangente Festival für Gegenwartskultur in St.Pölten

2019-2020 - Senior Scientist at the artistic doctorate school of KUG (Kunstuni Graz)

since 2004 till now - a freelance perfomer, choreographer, musician, teacher

DanceWEB Scholarship, Startstypendium of BKA (Federal Chancellery – Department of Culture in Austria), a Wild Card Scholarship at the CND Montpellier Mathilde Monnier, Artist in Residency at les Recollets in Paris, WP Zimmer Antwerp, Studio C de la B in Gent, Wasp Bucharest, CND Paris, Chisenhale Gallery London, Austrian Cultural Forum in Warsaw.

2010 - mentioned as a future emerging choreographer in a Balletttanz Magazine.

 Her own work is often situated on the intersection of theatre and public space.

„Hold Your Horses“ (2008), „The Mob: Fixing Freedom Tour“ (2009), „Empathy Project Vol. I“ (2010), „Until death do us part“ (2011), „New Viennese Organic Actionism“ (2011), „When I don't dance, I collect crystal balls“ (2012), “Sanctuary” (2014), „What’s in the artist’s head“ (2016), „Anti Fascist Ballet School“ and „iChoreography“(2018)  were shown at various European dance festivals and conferences (Kampnagel Hamburg, ImpulsTanz Festival, Sophiensäle Berlin, Gessnerallee Zürich, Body Mind Festival Warsaw, Wiener Festwochen, steirische herbst a.o.)

MUSIC

 2008  - 2014 - lead singer and a bass player in a post-punk band The Mob Fixing Freedom,

since 2015  - half of the rap-rave formation Mermaid & Seafruit (Elevate Festival, Wiener Festwochen, Ars Electronica, Hyperreality).

May 2020 - organizer an experimental symposium for artistic research on interrelations between body and sound and artists' social responsibility in times of CoVid19.
